Howto Move a reseller customer to their own HostGator account

Here’s a rough draft of the process for moving a customer from our reseller account to their own HostGator account.

Why?

The expertwebsupport reseller account is nearly full. This sometimes causes us problems when we try to do something such as backup an entire site. Even the cheapest HostGator accounts come with unlimited disk and bandwidth usage.

I don’t want to increase the limits on our reseller account. We’re not charging most of our customers for hosting anyway. It would cost us more in time and effort to bill the customers than it’s worth.

So the simplest solution is to move them to their own account. We can continue to support them on a T&M basis if they want us to do so.

How?

According to a support phone call on 7/5/2013:

  • Have the customer open their own billing account at HostGator.
  • Have the customer send us the confirmation email with the credentials for their HG billing account.
  • Go to the HostGator Transfer page.
  • Click on the type of account the customer created. Probably “Shared”.
  • Fill in the info regarding the new billing account.
  • Fill in the info for the old reseller account
    {Add more info here; I don’t know what’s on that screen yet.}
  • Wait for the content transfer to be done.
  • Test the new site to make sure it’s up. See ?? for how to test the site before you change name servers.
  • Change the Nameservers associated with the account. Maybe at GoDaddy or NetSol; maybe at HostGator.
  • Test everything: website(s), email, more?
